5x5k, 2050 teams, more than 10,000 finishers – and iCON in the thick of it!
The team iCON participated with 5 runners in the MOPO Team-Run in Hamburg’s Central Park. Next to this sport event the idea was to have fun and enjoy a great evening with BBQ and drinks. For sure this event will be followed by many more its kind.
For the eleventh time, the Hamburg-based newspaper MOPO put on its annual relay race in late August. Even though the weather forecast was unseasonably bad, more than 2,000 teams from different industries gathered at Hamburg Stadtpark, ready to compete. Leaving its containers at home, team iCON of iCON International Container Service entered the ring armed with a pavilion, a table, some benches, and (most importantly) a grill! To us, the most exciting thing about this event was not to focus on the fastest runner, but on the whole team.
Participating in this 5x5k relay race, on what is probably the greenest course Hamburg has to offer, was a great first for us. Despite the mediocre forecast, the weather brought its a-game on race day, and the organizers gave their best to make sure every participant had a good time. After finishing the running track everybody was welcomed with grilled sausages from the BBQ and drinks for a quick fresh up.
In the end, team iCON came in with a total running time of 2 hours and 15 minutes, which – given some previous injury concerns – is a solid result. In numbers: we placed 378 of 654 Mixed Teams on the second day of the event. Among container traders, we came in first.
Just because the race was over, the night was not. Next to the race track, the lawn was soon home to a great barbecue. The perfect setting for this successful day to come to an end with delicious food and some cold drinks.
Our participation not only contributed to the event’s participants record, but also to its good cause. For each runner, the organizers gave 10 euros of the entry fee to the Stadtpark Verein Hamburg e.V., which will use the money to design a educational tree trail in this green oasis.
One thing’s for certain: we will be back next year and would love to see some familiar faces from the container industry on the track.
